Smoothie of the week 7/14/16 Strawberry-Kiwi Kiss
The Strawberry-Kiwi Kiss:
Besides tasting excellent, kiwi fruit is packed with more vitamin C than an equivalent amount of orange. In the world of phytonutrient research, kiwifruit has fascinated researchers for its ability to protect DNA in the nucleus of human cells from oxygen-related damage. Researchers are not yet certain which compounds in kiwi give it this protective antioxidant capacity, but they are sure that this healing property is not limited to those nutrients most commonly associated with kiwifruit, including its vitamin C or beta-carotene content. Since kiwi contains a variety of flavonoids and carotenoids that have demonstrated antioxidant activity, these phytonutrients in kiwi may be responsible for this DNA protection.
As if all that wasn't reason enough, garnishing a smoothie with a slice of kiwi and a strawberry can turn any head.
Here is what you are going to need:
1¼ c cold apple juice
1 ripe banana, sliced
1 kiwifruit, sliced
5 frozen strawberries
1½ tsp honey
All you need to do is combine the juice, banana, kiwifruit, strawberries, and honey. Blend until smooth. Garnish with a slice of kiwi and strawberry. This recipe will serve 4 people, so grab some friends and get healthy.
This high-fiber smoothie recipe becomes even healthier when you use organic kiwis, which contain higher levels of heart-healthy polyphenols and vitamin C.
